Belgium

Prof. Dr Bart Neyns obtained his medical degree from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 1992. As a research fellow of the Fund for Scientific Research, he conducted four years of preclinical research on the molecular genetic background of cancer cells and the use of recombinant viruses for cancer therapy. In 2001, he earned his PhD in Medical Sciences based on this research.

After completing his doctoral studies, he finished his training in internal medicine with a subspecialisation in medical oncology in 1999. Since then, Prof. Neyns has worked successively as a resident, clinic head, department head, and, since 1 May 2019, as head of the Department of Medical Oncology at UZ Brussels. Between 2010 and 2018, he also worked part-time as an expert consultant in dermato-oncology at the ULB Erasme Hospital. Since 2007, Prof. Neyns has been a clinical professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the VUB. He has successfully supervised numerous PhD, master’s, and bachelor’s students.

Throughout his professional career, he has remained actively involved in clinical research on new treatments for patients with melanoma, glioblastoma, and colorectal cancer. Together with his colleagues at UZ Brussels and the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the VUB, he has conducted several studies independently of the pharmaceutical industry, focusing on innovative treatment methods. His research has repeatedly been supported by organisations such as Kom op tegen Kanker and the Foundation against Cancer.

He is the author of more than 140 PubMed-cited scientific publications, including articles in leading high-impact medical journals. In 2013, he received the Hilde Bruer Prize for his contributions to academic cancer research.
